Hangzhou Dreieck Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has commenced full-scale production for the Phase I energy storage project at the Zhebei Converter Station in Linping District, marking a significant milestone in the deployment of long-duration energy storage technologies, including vanadium flow batteries (VFBs).

The project has a total installed capacity of 50MW / 200MWh, incorporating:

  • 25MW / 100MWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) system
  • 25MW / 100MWh lead-carbon battery system

This hybrid configuration demonstrates the growing role of vanadium-based energy storage in enabling reliable, flexible and scalable grid infrastructure.

Vanadium Flow Batteries: Enabling Long-Duration, Safe and Sustainable Storage

The inclusion of a large-scale VFB system highlights the increasing recognition of vanadium technology as a critical solution for modern energy systems. Unlike conventional battery chemistries, VFBs offer:

  • Long-duration energy storage (4+ hours and beyond), ideal for renewable energy integration
  • Exceptional cycle life, with no degradation of active material over tens of thousands of cycles
  • Intrinsic safety, using non-flammable aqueous electrolytes
  • Full depth-of-discharge capability without impacting lifespan
  • Decoupled power and energy scaling, allowing flexible system design

These characteristics make VFBs particularly well-suited for grid applications requiring high reliability, durability and operational flexibility.

Strengthening Grid Stability and Renewable Integration

Once operational, the Zhebei Converter Station project will play a vital role in supporting a more resilient and low-carbon power system:

  • Peak Shaving & Load Management: Efficiently stores excess electricity and releases it during peak demand periods
  • Renewable Energy Smoothing: Mitigates intermittency from wind and solar generation
  • Grid Stability Services: Provides rapid response for frequency and voltage regulation
  • Energy Security: Acts as a dependable backup power source for critical infrastructure

The VFB system, in particular, will enable high-frequency cycling and long operational life, supporting daily grid balancing without performance degradation.

Accelerating the Energy Transition in China

Linping District is advancing its ambition to become a leading “Green Energy Port,” with strong focus on renewable energy and next-generation storage technologies. As renewable penetration increases, the need for long-duration energy storage solutions such as VFBs becomes increasingly critical.

This project reflects a broader industry trend: the integration of vanadium flow batteries as a key enabler of deep decarbonisation, supporting higher renewable penetration while maintaining grid reliability.

Project Delivery and Industry Leadership

To ensure high-quality execution, Hangzhou Dreieck Energy Technology Co., Ltd. has established a dedicated project team and implemented comprehensive production and quality control systems. Manufacturing, procurement and system integration are progressing efficiently, with rigorous testing applied to core components including battery stacks and system modules.

A Benchmark for Vanadium Energy Storage

The Zhebei Converter Station Phase I project is expected to become a flagship demonstration of hybrid energy storage systems, showcasing how VFB technology can complement other battery chemistries to deliver optimal performance across multiple grid applications.

As global energy systems transition toward higher shares of renewable power, vanadium flow batteries are increasingly positioned as a cornerstone technology for long-duration, safe and sustainable energy storage.
