Landmark long-duration energy storage project at Khavda Solar Park marks a major milestone in India's clean energy transition

Bondada Engineering Limited has been awarded the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract by NTPC Renewable Energy Limited (NTPC REL) for the development of India's first and largest grid-scale 100 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VFB BESS) at the Khavda Solar Park in Gujarat. The project also includes 10 years of Operations and Maintenance (O&M) services and is scheduled for completion within 10 months of the Notification of Award (NOA). 

The project represents a significant milestone for India's energy storage sector and reinforces the country's commitment to deploying advanced long-duration energy storage technologies that support the rapid integration of renewable energy into the national grid. Bondada Engineering will execute the project in partnership with Delectrik Systems Pvt. Ltd., which will serve as the technology partner for the VFB system. 

The 100 MWh VFB BESS is expected to play a critical role in enhancing grid stability and enabling greater penetration of renewable energy by providing reliable, long-duration energy storage. Unlike conventional lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery systems, vanadium flow batteries offer an operational life exceeding 25 years, near-zero capacity degradation over repeated charge-discharge cycles, high intrinsic safety, and lower long-term operating costs. 

The adoption of VFB technology also supports India's energy security objectives by leveraging domestic vanadium resources, reducing long-term dependence on imported battery materials, and strengthening indigenous clean energy capabilities. The project aligns with the Government of India's ambitious target of deploying approximately 236 GWh of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) by 2030, highlighting the growing importance of long-duration energy storage solutions in achieving national renewable energy goals.
