A new 500MW / 2GWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) manufacturing base will be established in Yongren County, Chuxiong Prefecture, Yunnan Province, further strengthening China’s rapidly growing long-duration energy storage sector.

The project was announced during the Yongren Investment Promotion Conference held on 3 March, where Yongren County Government signed a cooperation agreement with Yunnan Juhe Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. to develop the new vanadium flow battery production facility. The project will involve an investment of approximately RMB 150 million and will support the deployment of vanadium flow battery technology for grid-scale energy storage applications.

Vanadium flow batteries are increasingly recognised as one of the most promising technologies for large-scale, long-duration energy storage, particularly for integrating renewable energy into modern power systems. Unlike conventional batteries, vanadium flow batteries offer:

  • Long operational lifetimes exceeding 20 years
  • High safety and thermal stability
  • Independent scaling of power and energy capacity
  • Full recyclability of vanadium electrolyte

These characteristics make the technology particularly well suited for grid-scale energy storage, renewable integration, and long-duration energy storage (LDES) applications.

Yongren County has emerged as an attractive location for renewable energy investment due to its strong solar resources and supportive local policies. The region benefits from average annual sunshine of approximately 2,836 hours, providing excellent conditions for solar power generation and integrated storage deployment.

The area is already home to one of Yunnan Province’s largest independent energy storage installations — the Yongren Zhixin 300MW / 600MWh energy storage power station, which recently completed construction and has been connected to the grid. This project represents an important step in the development of a regional clean energy ecosystem that integrates renewable power generation with advanced energy storage technologies.

The establishment of the new vanadium battery manufacturing base reflects the broader momentum behind vanadium flow batteries in China and globally, as countries accelerate the deployment of long-duration energy storage to support the transition to low-carbon power systems.

By combining strong renewable resources with expanding energy storage infrastructure, Yongren is positioning itself as a regional hub for green energy development, spanning renewable power generation, energy storage manufacturing, and grid integration technologies.
