Two landmark energy storage demonstration projects have officially broken ground in Weifang High-Tech Zone: the Shandong Zhaoyang 100MW/400MWh energy storage station and the Shandong Yuanpu 600MW/1800MWh comprehensive energy storage demonstration project. The ceremony brought together representatives from participating organizations to mark a major step forward in the region’s energy storage industry.

Backed by a total investment of approximately ¥2.3 billion, the projects adopt a hybrid “vanadium flow battery (VFB) + lithium iron phosphate (LFP)” architecture to deliver safe, efficient, green, and long-duration storage that supports renewable integration and grid stability across Shandong Province. Enerflow is providing core technical support.

Project Highlights

  • Shandong Zhaoyang 100MW/400MWh
Hybrid configuration pairing 99MW/396MWh LFP with 1MW/4MWh VFB, combining capacity assurance with enhanced stability and long-duration performance.
  • Shandong Yuanpu 600MW/1800MWh (Demonstration)
To be built in stages, with initial phases configured as:
    • Phase I: 200MW/402MWh (≈199MW/398MWh LFP + 1MW/4MWh VFB)
    • Phase II: 200MW/440MWh (≈180MW/360MWh LFP + 3MW/12MWh VFB + 17MW/68MWh LFP)
These staged deployments are designed to progressively unlock system performance and validate hybrid storage at scale.

Timeline and Impact

Construction of both projects is scheduled to complete by December 2025, with grid connection targeted for March 2026. Once operational, the facilities will significantly enhance Weifang High-Tech Zone’s peak-shaving and frequency-regulation capabilities, mitigate renewable intermittency, and contribute to the build-out of a new-type power system while advancing large-scale applications of hybrid storage in China.
