Root-Power, a leading battery energy storage system (BESS) developer, today announced the submission of plans for four pioneering long-duration energy storage (LDES) projects to Ofgem’s recently launched cap and floor support scheme.

Spanning across West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Buckinghamshire, and Lincolnshire, the proposed projects represent a total of 2.4GWh of storage capacity and a combined output of 300MW. Each site will utilise vanadium flow battery technology—an emerging alternative to lithium-ion that is particularly suited for longer discharge durations and enhanced cycle life.

This strategic move marks a significant shift for Root-Power, which has traditionally focused on 2-hour and 4-hour lithium-ion systems. The submitted projects, designed for 8-hour duration, signal the company’s expansion into next-generation energy storage technologies that can better support grid stability and the UK's transition to renewable energy.

The application comes as part of Ofgem’s cap and floor investment framework, launched in April 2025 in partnership with the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) and the National Energy System Operator (NESO). The scheme is designed to stimulate investment in long-duration storage by guaranteeing revenue floors while capping excess returns—ensuring both investor confidence and value for money.
