Solubility Products of Carbides and Nitrides

The formation of compounds as precipitates in steel is governed by their Free Energies of Formation. These are usually expressed as the logarithm of the solubility product of the compound, in the form:

where M and X are the metal and interstitial elements forming the compound MaXb, T is the absolute temperature, and A, B are constants for a particular compound forming in a particular phase.
