Ashlawn Energy Launches VanCharg Battery Manufacturing at Xerox Webster Campus, Advancing Long-Duration Clean Energy Storage in New York

New manufacturing facility advances long-duration energy storage technology and strengthens Greater Rochester’s clean energy economy

27 October 2026 — Ashlawn Energy LLC, a developer and manufacturer of advanced energy storage solutions, has officially begun production of its proprietary VanCharg vanadium flow battery (VFB) systems at its new 10,000-square-foot manufacturing facility on the Xerox Webster campus in Webster, New York.

The company celebrated this important milestone on 15 October, marking a major step toward expanding commercial production of its innovative long-duration energy storage technology. The facility consolidates manufacturing and assembly operations and is expected to bring 20 jobs to the Greater Rochester region.

“Watching Ashlawn Energy go from concept to actualization has been a long time coming and it is a proud moment for me to see production begin,” said Norma Byron, president and founder of Ashlawn Energy.

Advancing Long-Duration Energy Storage

Ashlawn Energy's VanCharg VFB technology is designed to meet the growing demand for safe, reliable, and sustainable energy storage. Unlike conventional lithium-ion batteries, VanCharg systems use a water-based, non-flammable electrolyte and are designed to deliver four to 14 hours of energy storage with an operational lifespan of up to 30 years, according to the company.

The technology enables utilities, businesses, and communities to store electricity from renewable sources such as solar and wind, improve grid reliability, reduce peak electricity costs, and support extended-duration backup power.

As renewable energy adoption accelerates, vanadium flow batteries offer a promising solution for integrating clean energy into the electric grid while improving energy resilience and operational flexibility.

Strengthening New York's Clean Energy Economy

Ashlawn Energy's expansion reinforces Greater Rochester's growing reputation as a center for clean energy innovation and advanced manufacturing.

The company relocated from Vestal to Webster in 2026, attracted by the region's skilled workforce, manufacturing infrastructure, and research capabilities.

“Energy innovation is a key industry strength that made Greater Rochester the right location for Ashlawn Energy to establish operations and scale production of its energy storage solutions,” said Matt Hurlbutt, president and CEO of Greater Rochester Enterprise.

Ashlawn Energy also benefits from its longstanding collaboration with Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), including the Center of Excellence in Advanced and Sustainable Manufacturing and the Golisano Institute for Sustainability. These partnerships support battery design optimization and the advancement of commercial-scale VFB manufacturing.
