CNNP Rich Energy Completes Full Capacity Grid Connection for 50MW/200MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage Project
August 29, 2024 – CNNP Rich Energy has successfully connected its Zhongboyuan 50MW/200MWh independent shared vanadium flow battery energy storage project to the grid at full capacity, marking a significant milestone as the largest commercial vanadium flow battery storage facility on the grid side in China. This project is also CNNP Rich Energy’s first deployment of vanadium flow battery technology.

Located in Shandan County, Zhangye City, Gansu Province, the project's first phase features a 50MW/200MWh energy storage system. This project faced numerous challenges due to the lack of prior construction experience in such large-scale vanadium flow battery systems. Despite these hurdles, the project team demonstrated remarkable collaboration and determination, overcoming severe winter weather conditions and various construction difficulties. Adhering to strict safety and quality standards, they successfully completed the construction goals on time.
To ensure the project's smooth progress, the team proactively coordinated with manufacturers and design personnel, anticipating potential construction challenges. By identifying critical paths and implementing effective strategies, they achieved a significant milestone—completing the supporting substation structure 15 days ahead of schedule. This early completion was crucial in maintaining the overall construction timeline.
The vanadium flow battery system stores and releases energy through the redox reactions of vanadium ions in different valence states, using an aqueous solution as the supporting electrolyte. This technology offers numerous advantages, including safety, scalability, long lifespan, environmental friendliness, and flexible regulation. The commissioning of this project significantly reduces the overall cost of the power system, effectively addresses issues related to wind and solar power curtailment, and improves the efficiency and reliability of grid operations.
CNNP Rich Energy is committed to advancing the development of innovative energy solutions and leading the way in the renewable energy sector. The company will continue to support the optimization of the energy structure in the Hexi region of Gansu Province, enhancing the efficient utilization of renewable energy resources. This initiative is part of China Nuclear Huineng's broader efforts to support Gansu Province's green economic transition and sustainable development.
