Construction officially began on 26 June on the 120 MW/480 MWh electrochemical energy storage power station in Heyang County, Shaanxi Province. The project marks a significant milestone in the deployment of long-duration energy storage infrastructure in Northwest China and reinforces the region's commitment to building a cleaner, more resilient energy system. The groundbreaking ceremony, held at the Heyang County Economic and Technological Development Zone, was attended by government officials, industry leaders, financial institutions and key project partners.

Recognised as a 2026 Provincial Key Construction Project in Shaanxi Province and the first large-capacity, long-duration independent energy storage demonstration project in Weinan City, the development represents an important step towards building an integrated "generation-grid-load-storage" power system that will support China's transition to a low-carbon energy future.
The project is being developed by Shaanxi Guihua Energy Group Co., Ltd. and will incorporate 120 MW/480 MWh of energy storage capacity together with a new 110 kV booster substation. According to the project information, the facility will utilise vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology, comprising 240 standardised 2 MWh battery modules integrated into a coordinated energy storage system. The total project investment is reported to be approximately RMB 980 million.
Speaking at the ceremony, Liu Lei, General Manager of Shaanxi Guihua Energy Group, highlighted the strategic advantages of Heyang County for renewable energy development and thanked the local government for its strong support throughout the planning and approval process. He stated that the company remains committed to expanding investment in renewable energy and energy storage projects while contributing to China's carbon peaking and carbon neutrality objectives.
Once operational, the energy storage station is expected to deliver multiple benefits to the regional electricity system and local economy, including:
- Improving grid flexibility through off-peak charging and peak-time discharge.
- Enhancing grid reliability and frequency regulation capabilities.
- Increasing the integration and utilisation of renewable energy by reducing wind and solar curtailment.
- Supporting local employment during construction and operation.
- Encouraging the development of the regional energy storage manufacturing and service supply chain.
- Providing a replicable demonstration model for the safe, large-scale deployment of new energy storage technologies across Shaanxi Province.
Representatives from the State Grid Weinan Power Supply Company, Heyang County Government, financial institutions, investment organisations and technology partners—including BYD, NR Electric, and Dalian Rongke Power—joined the ceremony to witness the official start of construction.
Following the groundbreaking, Shaanxi Guihua Energy Group announced that it will work to accelerate construction, grid connection and commercial operation of the facility. The company also plans to use the project as a catalyst for further investment in energy storage across the region, supporting the high-quality development of the energy sector in Weinan and the wider Guanzhong area.
