The groundbreaking ceremony for the Ordos Gushanliang 3GW/12.8GWh Energy Storage Station Project was held on 28 June, marking a significant milestone in Inner Mongolia’s renewable energy development. This large-scale project, located in Dalad Banner’s Engebei Town, represents a major effort to support China’s "dual-carbon" strategy and accelerate the transition to clean energy.

Project Overview
With a total investment of 11.2 billion yuan (USD 1.54 billion) and covering 1,100 acres, the project integrates multiple advanced energy storage technologies, including:
- Lithium Iron Phosphate (LFP) batteries
- Vanadium Flow Batteries (VFB)
- Molten Salt Thermal Storage
Upon completion (scheduled for December 30, 2025), the station will deliver 3.6 billion kWh of clean electricity annually to the grid, generating an estimated 1.8 billion yuan (USD 248 million) in annual revenue and 250 million yuan (USD 34.4 million) in tax contributions. It will also enhance grid stability, reduce renewable energy curtailment, and create over 100 local jobs.
Key Investors and Contributions
The project is jointly developed by five leading energy companies, each contributing cutting-edge technology and substantial investments:
- Inner Mongolia Zhongdian Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd.
- Invests 3 billion yuan (USD 413 million) in a 500MW/2,000MWh independent energy storage station.
- Expected annual revenue: 560 million yuan (USD 77 million).
- Envision Technology Group
- Invests 2.8 billion yuan (USD 386 million) in a 1GW/4GWh grid-side storage facility, one of China’s largest.
- Ordos Dalad Banner Boliang New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. (subsidiary of Hypontech)
- Invests 1.9 billion yuan (USD 262 million) in a 500MW/2,000MWh storage station, improving regional grid reliability.
- Ordos Luanxing New Energy Technology Co., Ltd.
- Leads a 300MW/1.2GWh hybrid storage system (LFP + VRFB), with 1.5 billion yuan (USD 207 million) investment.
- Dalad Banner Shenneng New Energy Co., Ltd.
- Invests 2 billion yuan (USD 276 million) in a 200MW/1.6GWh thermal storage system, enabling 8-hour long-duration storage for peak shaving.
Strategic Significance
The project aligns with Inner Mongolia’s vision to become a "National Energy and Strategic Resource Base", strengthening the Mengxi Grid’s peak regulation and renewable integration capacity. Officials emphasize its role in reducing wind/solar curtailment and supporting regional economic growth.
