In the first half of 2024, China has successfully completed eight significant long duration energy storage projects, marking substantial progress in the country's renewable energy and carbon reduction goals.

1. PetroChina's First Zinc-Bromine Flow Battery Energy Storage System in Xinjiang

On 29 June, PetroChina announced the successful application of its first zinc-bromine flow battery energy storage system at the Mahu 078 well site in Xinjiang. This marks that the company's energy storage system has been applied in off-grid remote well oil production scenarios, contributing to the group's "zero carbon" initiative. The zinc-bromine flow battery system utilizes water-based zinc bromide electrolyte, a natural flame retardant, to lower operational costs and enhance efficient oil and gas extraction.

2. Largest Hybrid Energy Storage Project in Jiangsu Province

On 23 June 23, China Energy Engineering Group Jiangsu Power Design Institute commissioned the largest hybrid energy storage power station in Jiangsu Province. The Huadian Guanyun 200 MW/400 MWh project successfully began back-feeding electricity. The project, located in Lianyungang, features a 190 MW/380 MWh liquid-cooled lithium iron phosphate storage system and a 10 MW/20 MWh vanadium flow storage system. It can store up to 400,000 kWh of electricity, sufficient to power 200,000 homes for a day.

3. PowerChina's 156 MW/624 MWh Energy Storage Project in Xinjiang

PowerChina's 156 MW/624 MWh energy storage project in Barkol, Xinjiang, designed and implemented by CRRC Zhuzhou Electric, is now operational. It is the first project in Xinjiang to use multiple new energy storage technologies. The project includes a 150 MW/600 MWh lithium iron phosphate battery system, 2.5 MW/10 MWh semi-solid battery system, 2.5 MW/10 MWh vanadium flow battery system, and a 1 MW/4 MWh sodium-ion battery system.

4. Sungrow's Taierzhuang Phase II 1 MW/2 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Project

On 30 May, Sungrow successfully connected the second phase of the Taierzhuang Taiyang 1 MW/2 MWh vanadium flow battery project to the grid. Located in Shandong, this is the first large-scale independent chemical energy storage project in Zaozhuang, with a total capacity of 200 MW/400 MWh. The project aims to provide 800 million kWh of electricity annually, reducing standard coal consumption by 1.04 million tons and CO2 emissions by 34.55 tons.

5. Daqing Wolong 0.75 MW/3 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Demonstration Project

On 20 May, the Daqing Wolong 0.75 MW/3 MWh vanadium flow battery demonstration project was successfully connected to the grid. This project is part of China National Petroleum Corporation's efforts to enhance energy storage technology and improve self-consumption capabilities. The vanadium flow battery offers fast startup, high safety, and long life, supporting the green and low-carbon sustainable development of Daqing Oilfield.

6. Zhejiang's First Long-duration Energy Storage Project

On 8 May, Zhejiang Dayou Industrial Co., Ltd. completed the construction of the province's first "long-duration energy storage" project. The Hangzhou Yifengge Garment Co., Ltd. 500 kW/5 MWh vanadium flow battery storage station can provide 4-10 hours of continuous power, supporting both the enterprise and the grid during peak demand periods.

7. Wenzhou Environmental Protection Center 250 kW/1250 kWh Vanadium Flow Battery Storage Station

In April, the Wenzhou Environmental Protection Center's 250 kW/1250 kWh vanadium flow battery storage station was connected to the grid after passing a rigorous inspection by the State Grid. This project, located in the Xiaomen Chemical Park, offers high safety, stability, and longevity, providing significant support for the regional power grid.

8. CNNC's First Commercial Vanadium Flow Battery Storage Project

At the end of January 2024, CNNC Rich Energy successfully connected its first commercial vanadium flow battery storage project to the grid. The Dongle Beitan 100 MW photovoltaic project + 50 MW/200 MWh storage project in Zhangye, Gansu Province, represents the largest of its kind in the country. This project is part of the "14th Five-Year Plan" for wind and solar power in Gansu.

These projects collectively demonstrate China's commitment to advancing energy storage technology and achieving its carbon neutrality goals.
