On 5 January, the Zhoukou Vanadium Flow Battery Comprehensive Industrial Base Project officially broke ground during the 15th phase of Henan Province’s "Three Batches" project construction activities. With a total investment of 80.8 billion yuan, the project is set to drive technological innovation and industrial growth in vanadium flow batteries.

The project is a collaboration between Dalian Rongke Power Co., Ltd., CNNP Henan Energy Co., Ltd., and Zhoukou State-Controlled New Energy Co., Ltd.. The initiative will feature the construction of a 500MW/2GWh vanadium flow battery energy storage manufacturing facility, a research center for key technologies in flow batteries, a GWh-scale vanadium flow energy storage demonstration power station, and an integrated wind power-based green energy supply project with a capacity of one million kilowatts.
The first phase involves the construction of a 500MW/2GWh vanadium flow battery energy storage manufacturing facility with advanced production lines, focusing on stack production and energy storage system integration. Upon completion, the project is expected to achieve an annual output value exceeding 3 billion yuan. In subsequent phases, an additional 62.66 billion yuan will be invested to develop upstream and downstream components of the vanadium flow battery industrial chain. This includes the construction of projects such as a high-activity vanadium electrolyte manufacturing facility with an annual output of 800,000 cubic meters, an annual production of 40,000 electrolyte transmission pumps, a 10GWh energy storage converter manufacturing facility, and a 20,000-square-meter annual production base for perfluorosulfonic ion exchange membranes.
Driving Innovation in Energy Storage
Dalian Rongke Power Co., Ltd., a leader in the vanadium flow battery sector and a key player recognized by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, brings its expertise to Zhoukou. The company has achieved over 1GWh of vanadium flow battery installations worldwide, with a global market share exceeding 60% and a commanding 90% share in vanadium electrolyte products.
“Zhoukou is strategically positioned with rich wind and solar resources and robust industrial infrastructure,” stated Ms. Wang Xiaoli, Vice President of Dalian Rongke Power Co., Ltd. “With the strong support of Zhoukou’s municipal government, our partnership will create a pioneering, green, and synergistic energy storage industrial cluster, contributing to the region’s economic transformation and supporting China’s leadership in energy storage technologies.”
Supporting Zhoukou’s Green Future
Officials from the Lin’gang Development Zone emphasized their commitment to ensuring the project’s success by providing ongoing support, enhancing logistical coordination, and prioritizing project needs. “We aim to ensure the timely completion and operation of this critical initiative,” stated a spokesperson.
This project represents a significant step forward in advancing clean energy and storage solutions, bolstering China’s position as a global leader in sustainable technologies.
