India’s Largest Grid-Scale Vanadium Flow Battery Installation to Be Developed in Gujarat

Bondada Engineering secures landmark 20 MW/120 MWh energy storage contract, marking a major milestone in India's long-duration battery storage sector.

23 October 2026 – India is set to take a significant step forward in advanced energy storage technology with the development of what is expected to become the country's largest grid-scale vanadium flow battery installation. Bondada Engineering Limited has secured an Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract from Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited (GIPCL) to deliver the landmark 20 MW/120 MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage System (VFB BESS) in Vadodara, Gujarat.

The project represents a major development in India's emerging long-duration energy storage market, demonstrating the growing importance of vanadium flow battery technology in supporting renewable energy integration, grid stability and energy security.

A Landmark Installation for India's Energy Storage Sector

The 20 MW/120 MWh facility will be established at GIPCL's existing 165 MW natural gas power plant complex in Vadodara. With the capacity to deliver electricity for up to six hours at its rated output, the installation is designed to support long-duration energy storage applications and enhance electricity network flexibility.

Its anticipated status as India's largest grid-scale vanadium flow battery installation makes the project a significant milestone for the country's advanced battery storage industry.

Under the agreement, Bondada Engineering will undertake the engineering, procurement and construction of the facility, alongside providing operations and maintenance (O&M) services for ten years. The project is scheduled for completion within 18 months of receiving the notification of award.

Advancing Vanadium Flow Battery Technology

Vanadium flow batteries are emerging as an important technology for long-duration electricity storage, particularly as power systems incorporate increasing amounts of renewable energy.

By storing electricity and releasing it when required, these systems can help manage fluctuations in solar and wind generation, improve grid flexibility and support a more reliable electricity supply.

The Gujarat installation is expected to demonstrate the potential of vanadium flow battery technology at grid scale, contributing to the wider adoption of long-duration energy storage solutions in India.

Supporting India's Ambitious Energy Storage Targets

The project comes at a crucial time for India's energy transition, as the country seeks to significantly expand its battery energy storage infrastructure.

According to SolarQuarter, India is targeting approximately 236 GWh of battery energy storage capacity by 2030, compared with an existing installed capacity of around 9.3 GWh.

Achieving this ambitious expansion will require substantial investment in energy storage infrastructure and the deployment of technologies capable of supporting increasingly complex electricity networks.

The development of India's expected largest grid-scale vanadium redox flow battery installation reflects the growing role that alternative battery technologies could play in meeting these requirements.

Strengthening India's Long-Duration Energy Storage Market

For Bondada Engineering, the contract marks an important expansion into advanced energy storage technologies and establishes a long-term role in the sector through its ten-year operations and maintenance commitment.

More broadly, the project represents an important step towards diversifying India's battery energy storage landscape beyond conventional technologies.

As renewable energy deployment accelerates, large-scale installations such as the Vadodara project could provide valuable experience in integrating long-duration storage technologies into the national electricity system.

With its landmark 20 MW/120 MWh capacity and anticipated position as India's largest grid-scale vanadium flow battery installation, the Gujarat project represents a significant development for the future of long-duration energy storage in India.
