Invinity Vanadium Flow Battery Surpasses 1 GWh Milestone in California

1 October 2026 – Invinity Energy Systems has announced that its 10 MWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) at the Viejas Enterprise Microgrid in California has delivered more than 1 GWh of energy, marking a significant operating milestone for vanadium-based energy storage.

The system, operated by Invinity customer Indian Energy at the Viejas Casino & Resort near San Diego, was fully commissioned in late 2025. Since entering commercial operation, it has been used near-continuously, charging from on-site solar generation and supplying stable, on-demand electricity to support resort operations. Invinity reports that the battery has met or exceeded all contracted performance parameters.

The project combines Invinity’s VFB technology with a 15 MW solar array and received support from the California Energy Commission. It is described as California’s largest tribal microgrid installation.

The 1 GWh milestone provides a notable real-world demonstration of vanadium flow batteries in demanding, high-throughput energy storage applications. The technology is designed for repeated cycling and long-duration stationary storage, helping renewable generation provide electricity when it is needed.

Allen G. Cadreau, CEO of Indian Energy, said the achievement demonstrates the value of vanadium flow batteries in a demanding real-world environment, describing Invinity’s system as a “true workhorse” that has consistently performed to specification.

Matt Harper, President of Invinity, said the milestone demonstrates the ability of the company’s VFBs to provide reliable and repeatable service in commercial applications while helping maximise the value of on-site renewable generation.

For the vanadium industry, the milestone represents another important commercial demonstration of vanadium’s role in long-duration energy storage, supporting the integration of renewable electricity and the development of more resilient energy systems.
