Richmond Vanadium Technology Limited (ASX: RVT) has entered into a binding Mine-to-Battery Collaboration and Project Development Agreement with global vanadium flow battery (VFB) provider RKP Global, marking a significant step towards establishing an integrated Australian vanadium battery and long-duration energy storage (LDES) industry.

The agreement establishes a strategic framework for the two companies to jointly evaluate and develop vanadium flow battery (VFB) and long-duration energy storage (LDES) opportunities in Australia, supporting RVT’s vision of creating an integrated Australian “mine-to-battery” value chain. Under the agreement, RVT retains 100% ownership of its Richmond–Julia Creek Vanadium Project and associated mining tenure.

The collaboration will be led by RVT Energy Pty Ltd (RVTe), RVT’s wholly owned energy development subsidiary, which will coordinate Australian project development, stakeholder engagement and market expansion activities. RKP will contribute its extensive expertise in vanadium battery technology, electrolyte production, manufacturing and utility-scale energy storage deployment.

Building Australia’s Vanadium Battery Industry

The partnership follows more than two years of engagement between the companies and represents a significant milestone in the development of Australia’s emerging vanadium battery sector. The agreement covers opportunities in vanadium battery deployment, long-duration energy storage, vanadium electrolyte processing, downstream critical minerals development and broader energy transition initiatives.

RVT Executive Chair Brendon Grylls said:

“This agreement represents an important step forward in RVT’s long-term strategy to support development of an Australian vanadium battery and long-duration energy storage industry. Australia has a significant opportunity to participate in the emerging long-duration energy storage sector through the development of long-term capability across critical minerals, vanadium electrolyte processing and vanadium battery deployment.”

“RKP is a globally recognised participant in the vanadium flow battery sector, and this collaboration provides a strong platform to evaluate future vanadium battery and downstream energy storage opportunities in Australia.”

Supporting Long-Duration Energy Storage Growth

A key focus of the collaboration will be the evaluation of Australian long-duration energy storage opportunities, including participation in the proposed Kalgoorlie Vanadium Battery Energy Storage System (VBESS) Stage 2 Expression of Interest process in Western Australia. The project is viewed as an important step in accelerating the deployment of large-scale energy storage infrastructure across Australia.

The companies will also investigate future localisation opportunities for vanadium electrolyte production and downstream processing associated with RVT’s Richmond–Julia Creek Vanadium Project, creating the potential for a fully integrated Australian vanadium battery supply chain.

Establishing an Integrated Mine-to-Battery Platform

The agreement is designed to support the development of an Australian-led vanadium battery project delivery platform capable of supporting future projects through dedicated financing structures, special purpose vehicles, joint ventures and downstream processing initiatives. Future projects may also incorporate community benefit initiatives and Traditional Owner participation opportunities.

Key terms of the agreement include:

  • RVTe leading Australian market development, project origination and execution coordination;
  • RKP providing vanadium flow battery technology, technical expertise and manufacturing support;
  • Joint evaluation of project-specific delivery structures and financing models;
  • Assessment of future downstream localisation and broader mine-to-battery opportunities.
