Rongke Power (RKP) has announced the successful completion of the Xinhua Power Generation Wushi project, the world’s largest vanadium flow battery (VFB) installation. Located in Wushi, China, the system is set to be connected to the grid by end of December 2024, underscoring the transformative potential of advanced energy storage technologies in building a sustainable energy future.

Project Overview

  • Capacity: 175 MW/700 MWh, enabling four hours of continuous energy supply.
  • Applications:
    • Grid formation and stability.
    • Load shifting to manage peak electricity demand.
    • Frequency regulation for balanced power supply.
    • Renewable energy integration to facilitate clean energy transitions.
    • Black-start capability to restore power in emergencies.

The Wushi project marks a major milestone, exceeding Rongke Power’s earlier success with the Dalian 100 MW/400 MWh VFB system, operational since 2022. It highlights the increasing demand for sustainable, large-scale energy storage solutions while showcasing vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology as a scalable and practical choice. Notably, the Wushi project is the first large-scale VFB system to feature black-start functionality, empowering grid recovery without reliance on external power sources—an essential advancement for disaster recovery and resilience planning.

Why VFB Technology?

Although VFB technology involves higher upfront capital expenditure compared to alternatives like lithium-ion batteries, it offers unique advantages:

  • Longevity: Extremely long life span with minimal degradation.
  • Safety: Non-flammable electrolyte ensures operational safety.
  • Scalability: Easily expandable to meet increasing energy demands.
  • Sustainability: Recyclable vanadium electrolyte aligns with global carbon reduction goals.
