Shanghai Electric Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. (“Shanghai Electric Energy Storage”) has supported the successful commercial operation of the 12MW/48MWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) energy storage project at State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Shanghai Wujing Power Plant, one of Shanghai’s first batch of new-type energy storage demonstration projects. The milestone strengthens power supply reliability for Shanghai and supports the city’s energy transition.

The Wujing independent energy storage station project planned by SPIC Shanghai Electric Power Co., Ltd. has a total planned capacity of 102MW/228MWh. For this project, Shanghai Electric Energy Storage supplies a 12MW/48MWh VRFB energy storage system, built around the company’s self-developed 500kW/2MWh double-layer, containerized VRFB system. The solution adopts an outdoor, prefabricated-cabin layout designed to optimize space utilization while simplifying operations and maintenance, and is engineered for high integration, strong environmental adaptability, robust economics, and green performance—aligned with Shanghai’s requirements for high safety and high reliability in a mega-city grid.

With four-hour rated charge/discharge capability, the system can rapidly discharge during peak demand periods to help fill power shortfalls, acting as a key “energy reservoir” for peak support in the Wujing area and across Shanghai. The project is expected to contribute to greener regional energy structure optimization and improved flexibility under higher renewable penetration.

The transition of the SPIC Shanghai Wujing VRFB project into commercial operation marks an important step for Shanghai Electric Energy Storage in the development of urban energy hubs and provides a strategically significant demonstration case for Shanghai and the broader Yangtze River Delta new-type energy storage market. The project is also positioned to enhance unit operational efficiency and load response speed, while strengthening grid regulation capability and operational stability as renewables scale.
