Shanghai Electric is advancing rapidly on its 1GWh vanadium flow battery production facility, with operations set to commence by July 2025. The project, based in the Taobei District of Baicheng, Jilin, marks a strategic investment in energy storage technology, valued at a total of 1 billion yuan, with an initial investment of 200 million yuan.

The new facility will feature advanced battery management systems (BMS) to enable real-time capacity recovery and remote operational management, which will enhance both efficiency and safety. Construction began in September 2024, with foundational work on office buildings and plant facilities now complete. Further structural developments are underway, with the office building expected to be fully enclosed by the end of this year.

“This project is not only a significant energy infrastructure endeavor but also a critical catalyst for the growth of the new energy and storage industries in Taobei District, Baicheng,” said Li Guangbo, Deputy General Manager of Jilin Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd.

Since its founding in 2019, Shanghai Electric Energy Storage has focused on the development and manufacturing of vanadium flow battery components, including the crucial battery stacks for 5kW, 25kW, 32kW, and 50kW systems. These can scale from kW to MW capacities, serving diverse applications such as renewable energy integration, grid support, and distributed microgrids.

With a history of delivering over 50MWh in energy storage projects, Shanghai Electric continues to lead in the deployment of large-scale energy storage solutions. Their recent 1MW/5MWh vanadium flow battery installation in a 450,000 kW wind farm in Qinghai, along with other successful projects across China, underscore the company’s role in pioneering sustainable energy storage technologies.

Upon completion, the 1GWh production capacity is projected to generate annual revenues of 200 million yuan, reinforcing Shanghai Electric’s commitment to supporting China’s renewable energy targets.
