A major new step in China’s energy storage sector was announced on 24 May during the “Invest in Sichuan · Panzhihua Vanadium-Titanium Steel New Materials Promotion and Supply-Demand Cooperation Conference” held in Chengdu, China. Yanbian County has officially signed an investment agreement with Zhengzhou Tianhui Vanrong Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. and Xinglian Energy (Sichuan) Technology Co., Ltd. to develop a short-process vanadium electrolyte production project.

With a total investment of RMB 1 billion (approximately USD 140 million), the project will be located in the Vanadium-Titanium Industrial Development Zone and is designed to achieve an annual output of 80,000 cubic metres of vanadium electrolyte. Once operational, it is expected to generate an annual output value of RMB 3 billion (approximately USD 420 million).
The initiative marks a significant advance in the deployment of vanadium flow battery (VFB) technology in Southwest China, capitalising on Panzhihua’s rich vanadium resources. The project will not only drive the transformation of traditional vanadium processing toward high-value-added energy storage applications but also fill a critical regional gap in vanadium electrolyte production and system integration technology, positioning the area at the forefront of China's emerging energy storage industry.
