The city of Tianjin has taken a significant step in advancing its energy transition with the launch of its first long-duration energy storage power station project. Developed by Tianjin TEDA Power Co., Ltd., this groundbreaking initiative officially commenced on 28 February in the Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area.
With a total investment of approximately 1.6 billion yuan, the project boasts an impressive capacity of 156 MW and an installed energy storage of 1,115 MWh. At full power, the station can provide electricity continuously for about seven hours, delivering 1.17 million kWh daily and an estimated 388 million kWh of peak-shaving power annually. Set to be operational by the end of 2025, the facility is expected to integrate up to 500 million MWh of renewable energy into the grid each year while reducing over 200,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions through its rooftop solar system.

The project will utilize a combination of lead-carbon batteries, solid-state batteries, and vanadium flow batteries, offering a comprehensive approach to energy storage. Compared to traditional technologies, these three advanced storage solutions provide extended cycle life, high safety, and superior adaptability to environmental conditions. As a critical grid-side energy storage facility, the station will enhance peak regulation, frequency modulation, and backup power capabilities. During peak demand periods, it can rapidly release electricity to stabilize the grid, while during low-demand periods, it will absorb and store excess power to prevent resource waste and maintain grid balance.
TEDA Power has been at the forefront of energy innovation, previously investing in a 46.9 MWh grid-side electrochemical energy storage project in 2024. The facility, the first of its kind in TEDA's Eastern Zone, was successfully built, commissioned, and made operational within the same year—exemplifying the "TEDA Speed" in energy development.
As a crucial component of the region’s new energy infrastructure, the long-duration energy storage project aligns with China's new energy security strategy and supports TEDA’s transition toward a safe, stable, economic, and demonstrative smart grid. It will play a pivotal role in promoting a greener and more sustainable energy future for Tianjin, contributing to the city’s low-carbon transformation and strengthening its position as a leader in renewable energy integration.
