Wontai Power to Launch 140MW/560MWh Vanadium Flow Battery Energy Storage Project in Jiuquan Jinta
August 29, 2024 – Wontai Power is set to begin construction this year on a major 140MW/560MWh vanadium flow battery shared energy storage project in Jinta County, located in the northeastern part of Jiuquan City, Gansu Province. This project represents a significant step forward in utilizing Jinta's abundant renewable energy resources and addressing the challenges of energy storage and supply stability.

Jinta County is renowned for its excellent wind and solar energy resources, being one of the most wind-rich areas in Gansu Province and boasting some of the highest solar radiation levels in the country. With over 6,000 square kilometers of unused state-owned land available for development, the potential installed capacity for wind and solar power in the region could reach up to 100 GW.
However, the intermittent nature of renewable energy generation has been a critical factor limiting the reliability of power supply. To overcome this challenge, Jinta County has adopted a "multi-energy complementary" strategy, integrating various renewable energy sources and storage solutions to enhance energy security and efficiency. This approach has led to a rapid expansion of wind power, diversified energy storage initiatives, and the nascent growth of hydrogen energy, solidifying Jinta's role as a leader in multi-energy integration.
Since 2022, Jinta County has successfully attracted seven energy storage projects, featuring diverse technologies such as vanadium flow batteries, and lithium iron phosphate batteries. These projects are currently in the preparatory phases, involving site selection, specialized studies, grid connection applications, and administrative procedures.
The Wontai Power 140MW/560MWh vanadium flow battery shared energy storage project is among the most significant of these initiatives, with an estimated investment of 670 million yuan. The project is designed to connect to the Haohui 330kV aggregation and step-up station via a 110kV interface. Key preparatory milestones have been achieved, including company registration, project filing, preliminary site selection, grid connection design, and securing the necessary approvals for grid access from all three co-constructors of the Haohui 330kV aggregation station.
With all necessary approvals and planning in place, full-scale construction of the Wontai Power project is set to commence later this year. This development will significantly enhance Jinta County's energy storage capacity, which currently stands at 100 MW of independently shared energy storage already integrated into the grid.
