Invinity Energy Systems selects Equans Switzerland to support delivery of a landmark 1.5 GWh energy-storage system at Technology Centre Laufenburg

Invinity Energy Systems has appointed Equans Switzerland as its Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) partner for the FlexBase Group Technology Centre Laufenburg project in Switzerland.

The project will integrate an artificial-intelligence data centre and technology campus with a 1.5 GWh vanadium flow battery (VFB) system. Believed to be the largest VFB installation planned worldwide, the system is expected to expand to 2.1 GWh during a subsequent development phase.

Under the agreement, Equans Switzerland will provide the mechanical, electrical and piping works associated with Invinity’s battery system, together with other supporting technical services.

The appointment represents an important step towards the delivery of the project, following Invinity’s selection in May 2026 to design the large-scale battery system. Engineering and detailed design activities are already well advanced, while key construction milestones at the Laufenburg site have reportedly been achieved on schedule.

Invinity and Equans previously collaborated on a vanadium flow battery project in Belgium announced in 2022. That experience provided both companies with an established understanding of their respective technical capabilities and project-delivery standards.

Claudio Picech, Chief Executive Officer of Equans Switzerland, said the agreement recognises the company’s expertise in complex energy and infrastructure projects and supports Switzerland’s transition towards innovative and sustainable energy technologies.

Jonathan Marren, Chief Executive Officer of Invinity Energy Systems, highlighted Equans Switzerland’s technical capabilities, strong safety culture and local expertise as important factors in its selection for the landmark project.

Vanadium flow batteries are particularly well suited to large-scale, long-duration and high-throughput energy-storage applications. Their non-flammable electrolyte, long operating life and ability to undergo repeated charging and discharging with minimal degradation make them an increasingly important technology for supporting renewable electricity and strengthening grid resilience.

Invinity manufactures its Endurium vanadium flow batteries in the United Kingdom and Canada. The systems are designed for heavy-duty operation over 30 years or more and provide a durable, scalable and inherently non-flammable alternative for stationary energy storage.

The Laufenburg project demonstrates the growing role of vanadium-based energy storage in enabling dependable, large-scale renewable power systems. Once delivered, it is expected to establish a new international benchmark for vanadium flow battery deployment.
