Yantai Energy Storage Centre Connects First 100 MW/210 MWh Project to Grid
The first 100 MW/210 MWh battery energy storage project at the Yantai Energy Storage Centre (Western) has been successfully connected to the regional power grid in a single safe energisation operation.
The project, for which Shanghai Electric Environmental Protection Group serves as the engineering, procurement and construction contractor, represents a major milestone in the development of the 1 GW/2 GWh Yantai Energy Storage Centre in Laizhou, Shandong Province, China.

Located in Zhuqiao Town, the newly connected facility combines two energy storage technologies: lithium iron phosphate batteries account for 95% of its capacity, while vanadium flow batteries provide the remaining 5%. This hybrid approach brings together the rapid response of lithium-ion batteries and the long-duration, high-safety characteristics of vanadium flow battery technology.
The facility will support grid balancing, improve the integration of renewable electricity and enhance the reliability of the power system in Yantai and the wider Jiaodong region. It will also contribute to Shandong Province’s transition towards a cleaner and more flexible energy system.
The Yantai Energy Storage Centre has a planned total capacity of 1 GW/2 GWh and an estimated investment of RMB 3.5 billion. It has been designated a major Shandong provincial project for 2025.
The first phase will provide 450 MW/950 MWh of storage capacity. Following completion of the initial 100 MW/210 MWh project, a second 350 MW/750 MWh facility is planned. This second project will comprise 325 MW/650 MWh of lithium iron phosphate battery storage and 25 MW/100 MWh of vanadium flow battery storage.
The project team will undertake continuous equipment monitoring, regular inspections and dynamic operating-parameter optimisation to support the storage station’s long-term safety, stability and efficiency.
Once fully operational, the Yantai Energy Storage Centre is expected to strengthen peak-load regulation, increase renewable-energy utilisation and provide important infrastructure for the green transformation of the regional energy system.
